Chanel Couture Spring/Summer 2009

Karl Lagerfeld clearly understands how to make luxury look less in your face yet still remain breathtaking. After declaring "bling is out," Lagerfeld made a point of creating couture looks that are quietly beautiful. Instead of bling, Lagerfeld had hair artist Kamo design gorgeous headdress of paper -- yes, office paper that accented the modest outfits.

Using mostly white, Lagerfeld clearly conveyed his idea that he needed to start with a "blank piece of paper," and every piece simply chic; no avante-garde barely wearable pieces appear, and nothing is too over the top for even the most modest events. Once again, Lagerfeld proves why he is a fashion legend.
