Dark in Milan: Fall 2009

Milan is usually full of glitz, glamor, and color, but this fashion week it was much more somber and reserved. Of course, Milan's idea of "reserved" still featured brilliant metallics and sexy dresses, but it was a far cry from the showy fare of seasons past.

Giancfranco Ferré, Salvatore Ferragamo, Roberto Cavalli, Burberry, and Gucci all have quite dark collections. While some still have some glitz (Cavalli and Gucci), the others are heavier, with velvet and moody structure. I especially love the strong shoulders in Ferré's collection, which was a big trend for spring and is carrying over into the fall. Salvatore features bold shoulders, as well, but a bit more toned down than Ferré's, since Ferragamo is not one to run wild with trends.

In these collections, the splashes of blue color continues, my favorite example being the metallic cobalt in Ferré's collection (can you tell how much I love that collection?), though I do like the subtle usage of a deep, muted blue in Cavalli's collection. Even the whites and creams in Cavalli and Burbery's collections are bleak and have a sense of melancholy to them, pure of color in an almost tragically beautiful way.

Overall, Milan was quieter and more serious than usual, but still brought out many sensual, classic, sophisticated, and glam looks that remind us of why Milan fashion week is so fun!

Below are my favorite looks from the collections:

Gianfranco Ferré

Salvatore Ferragamo

Roberto Cavalli

Burberry
